Project Description
Washington State Healthy Youth Survey (HYS) data shows the correlation between behaviors such as tobacco and marijuana use as well as being bullied with lower grades in school. Tobacco use is associated with increased risk of drug use and one in three of all youth smokers will die from a smoking-caused disease. The earlier someone starts using marijuana, the greater the vulnerability to addiction and psychiatric disorders. According to “Research Review: School –based Health Interventions and Academic Achievement,” research shows for every health risk that is addressed with students, the students’ academic success increased. Ultimately, program impacts will be seen in the older grades, resulting in lower numbers on the HYS for risky behaviors.
