Mental Health First Aid is a groundbreaking public education program that helps the public identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. Neal Conan host of NPR's TALK OF THE NATION said, "Many of us have been trained how to respond if a colleague suffers a heart attack or chokes on food, but few know how to recognize a mental health crisis, much less what to do about it.
Northwest Missouri Medical Reserve Corps
On July 21-23, 2014 Unit Leader Debra Bradley and Unit Coordinator Kelly Kibirige attended YMHFA Train the Instructor training in Kansas City, Missouri at the University of Missouri-KC. We can now provide Adult MHFA, Youth MHFA and MHFA for Law Enforcement. Our next Adult MHFA class will be held on 8/19/14 for Parents as Teachers.
The NWMO MRC provided Mental Health First Aid to 25 public health professionals on 7/2/14 in St. Joseph, Missouri. One participant notes, " Algee is a good way to remember how to help someone in crisis.”
On May 30, 2014 the NW Missouri MRC leadership attended the regional Mental Health First Aid Summit. Agenda topics included:
State of the Algee-Nation Get an overview of the latest trends and news related to Mental Health First Aid USA, including evaluation information, SAMHSA funding, state legislative initiatives, module completion, and nationwide goals.
As of May 2014 the nation has 200,000 individuals certified to deliver Mental Health First AID. That's one per 1,585 persons. Like CPR everyone needs ALGEE.
